Is it really neccesary to use midi controllers Ive heard it is much easier to do it this way

Generally it's far easier to play riffs if you've got some kind of MIDI interface device, while it isn't necessary to have one. If you do have one, it's fairly easy to set up in FL Studio. Just go to options > MIDI settings, and under the Input list, select the sound card that your midi controller is connected to, and make sure Enable is selected. Also, make sure Auto Accept Controller is selected. I just have a basic MIDI keyboard and have found that it makes creating riffs a lot easier, and you can also buy MIDI devices with knobs and such, so you can control filters during song playback and record it live
